After 35 continuous years of operation (since 1979), CSEQ and CSXQ survey operation were closed after the spring 2014 administration. New orders are no longer being accepted. However, institutions and independent researchers may apply to license items from the CSEQ and CSXQ for local assessment or research purposes. If you have not participated in NSSE (National Survey of Student Engagement) or BCSSE (Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement), now is a good time to give them a look. In 2013, NSSE was updated with new items, scales, and reporting, while continuing to offer a high degree of customization for comparison groups, topical modules, major field reporting, and more. Overview
The College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ) is a versatile tool that assesses the quality of effort students expend in using institutional resources and opportunities provided for their learning and development.
Quality of effort is a key dimension for understanding student satisfaction, persistence, and the effects of attending college. The more students engage in educational activities, the more they benefit in their learning and development.

Common Uses
Institutions and their constituents want more information about three issues: assessment, accountability and accreditation.
Assessment emphasizes outcomes, or what students have learned; accountability emphasizes efficiency, or how resources are used; and accreditation emphasizes institutional quality and improvement.
Specifically, colleges and universities use their CSEQ results to:
- Determine program effectiveness.
- Measure learning outcomes and impact of campus environments (learning communities, FIGS, etc.).
- Assess academic year initiatives (first-year experience courses, senior portfolio projects, etc.).
- Merge with and complement institution-wide data for a richer understanding of student development issues.
- Compile accreditation data.
- Examine efforts of academic affairs and student affairs divisions.
- Assess division-wide programming and student learning.
- Assess student involvement in a variety of campus initiatives.
In addition to providing valuable information for the institution, students completing the CSEQ benefit from reflection and self-evaluation. Many students say completing the questionnaire prompts them to recall the range of activities in which they participated during the year and the progress they made toward important goals.
